Remains Of The Tray

Posted by Lidian on September 16, 2008

I am having some trouble with this 1960 ad on a number of levels. For starters, I know this is supposed to be a Hot Tray but they way they spell it with only one ‘t’ it looks like  Ho Tray or Hot Ray – neither of which sounds all that appealing.

This woman has a smile that would terrify a wolf – surely she is not the sort to keep a Ho Tray around the house. Right?

And that ghostly staff behind her!  They are all so elderly, too. Are they Edwardian great-house servants who, through some bizarre time-travel mishap, are being punished by having to work for this evil matron?

Or did they emanate from the Ho Tray, like Jeannie from her TV bottle? That would make a great sitcom – I Dream Of Hot Ray.

But which one is Ray? Maybe he’s still in the tray. Nobody else looks very – er, hot. Do they?

Also Benny Hill appears to be the chef. And he seems to be leering at the grande dame. I’m not certain what’s going on there. She doesn’t really look like his type, does she?

If Benny makes any of the kind of jokes he used to make on his show, he’s going to get that plateful of dinner right in the face!

After that, maybe Hot Ray could sing. He just sounds like a retro lounge lizard – a suburban Dean Martin clone with a martini and a microphone. And that will make the evening really gracious and charming.

  1. That was funny, and well-written. I enjoyed this post. I’m also rather worried about what the food might be that she’s serving. Maybe better not to know!

I think the ho tray could carry the food directly to her at the table, maybe like a waiter so she didn’t have to get up. hmm…

I’m sitting at my desk at work, giggling like a crazy person! My co-workers are going to be suspicious.

  5. And check out that funky coffee pot! I’m not sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s where the ghostly staff came from! And the ched DOES look like Benny Hill!

That is too funny a Ho Tray and she looks like the devil coming to get you. Besides who really had staff like that?

Yes, that’s quite an unnerving scene.
Evil Madam with her ghostly assistants…
“Here. Taste this. It’s wonderful.” And then that malevolent smile as the specters laugh in the background.

“Ahh. No. Thank you. I must be going. Bye.”

And then her boney hand reaches out and grabs you by the shoulder. “No. I insist. You must stay.”

    FOREVER the ghosts all laugh.

  10. What scares me the most is that I have two of the Salton trays in my basement right now. Yep, I’m that old.

I believe she’s serving green beans with garlic butter and garden slugs (in her hand), brussels-sprout bacon wraps (lower left) and an olive-spiked “festive mutton loaf” (lower right) along with some other secret delicacy (tuna fondue? herbed-mayonnaise popcorn?) in the covered vegetable serving dish.

The butler, portrayed by John Mahoney, hates the tuna fondue so much, he is surreptitiously giving it the finger. Wonder how that got past the art director?!

That woman is a ho tray. Oh, and, Tori? Come on–you know you love that incredible coffeepot as much as I do! I would be proud to pour Sanka out of that shiny, rocket-era thing!
