Trick Or Fruit
Posted by Lidian on August 9, 2008
If we can pull off Christmas in July, why not have a little bit of Halloween in August? After all, they’re starting to put the Halloween candy out just about now, aren’t they?
I get that Junior there on the left is supposed to be a watermelon. Not sure about his little brother. A strawberry, perhaps. This is how they kit up to go to bed at night? No mention of Halloween in the ad, and anyway if it was Halloween they would be poring over loads of cheap candy. Complaining about how many of those molasses taffy kisses in the orange wax paper they got. I hated those.
Also, pencils are no good. I got pencils a lot. I used to trick or treat in our apartment building. Ding dong! Whatcha got? My favorites were the mini packs of M&Ms, but chocolate in general was good. Also candy corn. I don’t really know why I liked it but I did.
What was your favorite Halloween candy? Any different now?
The funniest thing I saw someone get was a can of soda. Seriously, someone was handing out cans of soda in our neighborhood a few years ago. You have to carry that separately, it crushes the little Mars bars and things if you just chuck it in the same bag. Helps to have a parent along to carry the soda (ahem).
But oh yeah…the ad! The ad for sleepers. I still don’t really know what’s going on here.
As the incomparable Junie B. Jones says in Boo! And I Mean It, “I didn’t say trick or fruit.” Mind you, nobody ever says “trick or pencil” either, but fruit sounds better (off-rhyme with treat, and all that).

I wouldn’t have had to worry about squishing my candy if someone gave me a soda. I’d be drinking that sucker. *g*
And what IS up with that ad???

I *think* the younger boy is a radish, despite the strange little green garnishes which look almost like holly. (Lovely radish picture at http://www.painted-tiles.com/radishes.htm for comparison.)
This is a sad example of “obsessive crafting” — make a cozy, well-fitting sleeper for your son, then promptly ruin it by adding an immense watermelon hat. This is what labor-saving devices can lead to… when the housework’s more efficient, your wife will make radish pajamas out of sheer boredom.

Just had to stop and tell you how much I’m enjoying your site. We sell vintage items on eBay, and I write about anything nostalgia related on one of our blogs. I’m adding you to the sidebar links on our Yesterday’s Memories blog, and I’d love for you to stop by sometime.

Dare I say, I’m not much of a Halloween fan and, I think they look cute. I wonder what the year was?
BTW: If I had to go trick or treating I always chose a MOUNDS bar! And, still would! Reese’s as a second choice…

Here in Australia, Halloween isn’t really done. It’s sort of done a little bit by kids wanting an excuse to dress up, so you get maybe 2 or 3 knocks on your door that night.
My kids did it for a few years, and would hit confused adults who didn’t have candies and so offered up things like cans of baked beans.
Anyway, that picture is gorgeous. High Art, IMHO.

I’ve seen many homes give out cans of soda! The kids usually drink it right away, they’re so thirsty from running around!

That ridiculous watermelon hat and sleeper has the silliest thing I have seen in ages. Once a single neighbor gave out pennnies to the kids because he forgot to buy candy.

We had one family in our neighborhood that gave out toothbrushes.
Toothbrushes!!!
We soaped their windows.

Okay, my eyes are bad, but I think the ad touts a watermelon and a radish. A radish…surely at the top of every child’s list of favorite foods. Right up there with eggplant, liver, and rutabagas.
What is Watermeon Head doing? Inserting a mop handle in his mouth? This is a bizarre ad for sleepwear. I’ll bet they’ll both get a good night’s sleep with those huge hats on their heads.

How fun love these bright colored ads!
Can you imagine if kids would walk around
in something like this now! The closest
my kid came to this was a yellow
Teletubbie and yes I sort of made it,
before the costume was actually in
the stores to buy!

This reminds me of the scene in “A Christmas Story” where Ralphie’s mother forces him to try on the bunny pajamas that his crazy aunt made for him.

Who the hell would make or buy something like that for their kids? What kid would want to wear it? Do the hats double as pillows? What does “Perry-ized” mean??
As for my favorite Halloween candies: pretty much anything chocolate, but Snickers, Mars, Milky Ways, and M&Ms are the best. NO toffees, gummi candies, circus peanuts (BLARHG!!) or candy corn. Yes, I’m one of those rare freaks who actually hates candy corn.
