1960s Knitwear Models Have No Choice

Believe me, this was not a matter of choice. The photos with both guys were clearly taken after they said stuff like “Who the hell in their right mind would ever wear this?” and “Why exactly are we standing on what appears to be a roof?”

May I draw your attention especially to the knitted ties, and the light blue and harvest-gold tank tops. I would say that this is about 1967-69. I think I had a tank top like the blue one when I was about 8 years old in 1970.

lol oh no! The first one is the worst - I don’t think I could ever get my dh to wear anything from this :-0

I think the dark-haired guy has a crush on the blonde. Take another gander at the way he is looking at him in the upper right picture.

Amy - Yes, it is pretty terrible.

Bill - I was thinking the same thing! There is quite a subtext going on, which is often the case (in various ways) in these retro ads. How I love the subtexts!

Having been around back in 1969, I can honestly say that no one; man, woman or beast, wore things like that out in public.

Those have got to be the most horrible knits I have ever seen. The first one and the blue tank top are the worst. I was a teen back then and I agree with Vallen Queen so one I knew would have been caught dead wearing anything like that. It reminds me of the bunny suit part of Christmas Story. Put it on once and that is it.

Vallen - I think I had a vest like one of these but you are right, I never wore it. And believe me, I wore all sorts of things I shudder to remember. But not The Vest!

Rochelle - I think that the knitwear people were in their own little strange fantasy world…I have a hardcover book of stuff like this, including crocheted bathing suits.

    Oh god, my eyes.
