Phyllis Gets A New Idea

Another fabulous ad in the form of a comic strip, from a 1935 Ladies’ Home Journal. This time, it’s Pillsbury Flour - and its muse, Mary Ellis Ames of the Pillsbury’s Cooking Service - to the rescue of yet another harrassed and harried lady.
Phyllis does not want to hear about Jean and Jim’s vacation plans. She’s damn tired of everything: “the weather…planning meals…cooking the same old things!”
Hey, that’s what we’re having for dinner tonight, the same old things! My favorite recipe.
Still, I know precisely how Phyllis is feeling. I like how she threw in the weather too - let me just check and see that this isn’t the February edition of Chatelaine (P.S., it isn’t).
The friend tells her about Pillsbury and Mary Ellis Ames and all the new new new stuff she can whip up. Then comes my favorite line in the whole little drama. “I’ll order a bag of Pillsbury’s best flour today!”
Oh, yum!
Later, yes…later. The time in the ad when everything is all better. Boy, the guests love the food. (The guys do anyway, notice how the friend is all quiet and moody now. What’s up with that?)
Hubby says “every meal is a party lately. Phyllis always has some surprise!” I don’t know about you but I don’t want a party at every meal (very definitely not at breakfast). And as for Phyllis’ surprises…
I’m thinking flour souffle, roast flour, flour casserole. How’s that for a surprise party?
