Creamola Pudding Ad, 1940

The war effort, extended to dessert. This pudding mix, made in thrifty Scotland (Glasgow to be exact) required no eggs. They were quite excited about that, and said that you could even go back for seconds if you liked as it was so cheap. It came in three variations: custard, sago custard or rice custard.

I thought that pudding was a bit different than custard (which is eggier) but that was probably the point: a way of announcing that Creamola was eggy without saying: this is really eggy. Oh, and it was creamy too, hence the name.

I wonder what was really in it.

I found this in a coverless 1940 Woman’s Weekly magazine. And I found that in a secondhand bookstore basement which had a bit of everything in it. Cartons full of stuff, mostly not so great paperbacks. And all for a dollar apiece! I am going back there for sure, wearing really old clothes though (it was pretty dusty and I had to move some mops and buckets to get at the magazine piles).

The ads in this magazine are so wonderful that I might post some non-food ads too. There is a Tampax ad that is sensationally funny. I don’t think it quite works in my history/genealogy blog though!
